It’s hard to believe it’s been almost 10 years since the first installment of the Country Doctor series landed in my mailbox.

Ten delicious years! I’m so grateful that author Patrick Taylor is a pretty fast writer. It’s agonizing to wait for the next novel! Life without the Ballybucklebo crowd is a really depressing place.

AN IRISH COUNTRY PRACTICE, the latest installment in the series, is once again a joy to read. There’s no need for flashy bells and whistles. The Irish Country books just fit like your favorite slippers. There’s something to be said for the tried and true.

It’s the usual goings on at Number One Main Street: mysterious ailments, new characters, and loveable, old favorites that come and go. Kinky’s gift helps her and Archie come to the rescue of a couple in need. Donal – what can you say? – always with a trick up his sleeve, adds to his flock. Dr. Barry Laverty and Sue face decisions that could derail their marriage plans. Sir Arthur Guinness gets a new four-legged friend and a patient must come face-to-face with a long-time domestic abuse issue.

Supposedly, 13 is an unlucky number. But this, the 13th installment in the Country Doctor series, is just as enticing at the first. In today’s crazy world, it’s lovely to be transported to the warm, friendly, caring world that is Ballybucklebo.

What more can be said? Except, hopefully there will be many more books to come.Debra Jackson-Andrews
